Amerigo Vespucci
The atlantic crossing

The Amerigo Vespucci, a training ship of the Navy for over ninety years, stands as a custodian of the most ancient naval and maritime traditions, representing one of the best-known symbols of Italy worldwide. Commissioned by Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel and designed by naval engineering lieutenant colonel Francesco Rotundi, the Vespucci has retained its original essence intact, embodying the profound sense of tradition and its pivotal role in training.

This photographic work, curated by Carlo Mari and dedicated to the Atlantic crossing of the Nave Vespucci during its second round-the-world voyage, pays tribute to those who, in silence, serve as ambassadors of values and traditions.

“It will not merely be a ship entering a port, but Italy visiting another country,” remarked the Minister of Defence, Honorable Guido Crosetto, as he bid farewell to the Vespucci on its departure from Genoa on July 1, 2023. Aboard the vessel are 400 sailors: the Commander, his crew, and the young officer students, trained to respect and protect the ocean, master the art of navigation, and safeguard the secrets of ancient seafaring. The narrative within this book encapsulates not only a journey across the Atlantic but also the commencement of an adventure as vast as the sea itself.

Within these pages, carefully selected and rendered in black and white—a stylistic choice that harmonizes with the bulkheads of the sailing ship—the crew and students of the first class of the Naval Academy reveal their technical prowess, daily routines, and the passion and dedication that imbue every moment of individual and professional growth.

Carlo Mari is deserving of praise for capturing the essence of daily life aboard the Vespucci, allowing readers to immerse themselves fully in the onboard atmosphere as they peruse these pages.

“The language is inadequate, and the hand insufficient, to articulate all the wonders of the sea,” wrote Christopher Columbus, a navigator among navigators, a visionary among visionaries. Words alone cannot capture the adventure experienced by Vespucci during the Atlantic crossing from Praia, Cape Verde archipelago, to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. All five senses are required; certainly, the photographs in this remarkable book facilitate this task.

This isn’t the first time the navy training ship has braved this ocean. However, an Atlantic crossing aboard a sailing unit always presents challenges, for both novice and seasoned sailors alike. And this is just the first of countless challenges that Vespucci will encounter on its second tour of the world, scheduled for completion in 2025, following its departure from Genoa on July 1, 2023.

Numbers help to contextualize the magnitude of this endeavour, this oceanic voyage that began on August 6, 2023, departing from the platform cais novo of Praia. Covering a distance of two thousand nine hundred miles, traversing from the fourteenth to the twenty-first parallel in search of trade winds to fill the sails and inaugurate the new sea of the “queen of the seas.” Throughout, we vigilantly monitor the evolution of tropical depressions, born just above the equator, which, due to complex atmospheric dynamics, can develop into cyclones or hurricanes and pose a threat to our journey.

With four hundred and sixteen souls on board, including one hundred and twenty-eight students from the first class of the Naval Academy of Livorno, future officers in training, this voyage serves primarily as their baptism with the sea. The faces of my crew, the finest in the world, are etched within the pages of this volume: salt, sweat, tears, sun, smiles, fatigue, melancholy, and joy.

Twenty-two days at sea, punctuated by shifts, general manoeuvrings of sails, the whistles of our crew, collective orders over the intercom, meals in the mess, and astronomical observations—the rhythm of life aboard the vessel.

At ninety-three years old, Amerigo Vespucci stands proud, carrying our flag around the world as a floating ambassador of our beautiful country, symbolizing Italy’s maritime prowess. When its sails unfurl, unmistakably canvas and meticulously hand-sewn, it embodies beauty, safety, and tranquillity. Yet, it never forgets the sea’s unpredictable nature, maintaining a healthy respect and readiness for the unexpected.

As you peruse this book, immerse yourself in our experiences, navigate with your imagination, and broaden your horizons. This is Vespucci in the Atlantic, this is our Italy traversing the globe.

Carlo Mari, always in love with the marine world, inspired by photographers who traveled on commercial sailing ships of the early 1900s, embarked last summer for 45 long days – 23 of which were spent crossing the Atlantic – on the Vespucci ship to emotionally and spectacularly portray the life on board of the crew and cadets, the soul of the most beautiful ship in the world, creators and guardians of its magnificence.

The result is an intimate photographic book that makes it easy to feel the taste of adventure, to share the effort, joy, pride, emotion, friendship, and even the moments of tension that the men and women of the crew experience daily on this jewel of the Italian Navy.
